5 Star Review for Broken Slave by Savannah Hill

Title: Broken Slave
Series: Bound In Bloodlust #2
Author: Savannah Hill
Published Date: August 30, 2016
Genre: Paranormal/Erotica
Page Count: 90

Blurb:

A hard-working, small-town waitress, Macy has never desired a man as intensely as the one who just walked into her bar. But this captivating stranger is not just any man. He's not, in fact, even human.

A member of the bloodling race, his name is Nathan—but once he was called “Britton.” From an early age he was the abused slave-pet of a cruel child of privilege, forced to do his mistress’ evil bidding against those of his own kind. For years violence, depravity, and submission were all he knew, thanks to the human monster who corrupted his soul. But ultimately he broke free.

For the first time in a life filled with shadows, Nathan understands the pure power of this emotion called love. And though Macy fears the volatile world he inhabits, she is helpless to resist him. But now the sins of Nathan’s past are returning with a vengeance…and his enemies are back for blood.

Review:

Macy and Nathan's love story is fast paced and intense. Nathan is the unspoken leader of a ragtag band of former slaves. He just wants to exist in society but never plans on finding "the one". Their love is forbidden because the people in Macy's life do not want her with him. Nathan and Macy prove that they are meant to be and that one's past doesn't dictate who they are.
I loved Macy and Nathan together. They are such a great match. She's light to his dark. Their chemistry pops off the page and they have some very steamy scenes together.
The author did a great job with this book. Being a novella, it can be hard to create a storyline that keeps the reader entertained but the author accomplished that.

5 Star Review for Bad Apple by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Bad Apple
Series: The Uncertain Saints MC
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Genre: MC Romance
Release Date: September 1, 2016
Model: Alex Minsky
Photographer: FuriousFotog
The road to hell is paved with good intentions… Apple “Core” Drew needs The Uncertain Saints MC like he needs air. He is barely making it through the day, and each one that goes by takes him closer and closer to hell. Literally, not figuratively. He’s a half breath away from killing himself—maybe not by taking his own life, but he’s not against making someone else do it for him. Then he meets her. One of his club member’s sister, and his whole outlook on life changes. And not for the better. Just as surely as he ruined his life, he ruins her life, too. One lapse in judgement on his part, and his one night of happiness turns into the worst nine months of his life. Which he would’ve thought was damn near impossible with the things he’s done and seen. She never saw it coming… It was the beard. The beard made her do it. That is a good excuse for having sex with a man she barely knows, isn’t it? Yeah, who was she kidding? It wasn’t the beard. It was the way he looked so dejected and solemn. The sad look in his eyes pulls her in, and the way his rough hands touch her makes her stay. All she wants to do is take that look out of his eyes, but the consequences to her actions only make things worse, not better. One day is all she gets, and he’s not willing to give her more. Until she dies, that is. Then it’s too late.

Vale brings us the story of Kitt and Core. Core is troubled and is dealing with the aftermath of war. He joins the Uncertain Saints as a way to keep him sane. Core never intended on finding love. He feels that his life is too messed up for it. When Kitt stumbles into his life, all bets are off. For Kitt, she doesn't see the darkness that he carries around. She just see the good man underneath it all. Their relationship is unconventional and rocky at times but it's a romance that you must read.

I think this book has to be my favorite, so far, from this series. You are so drawn into Core's story, you're rooting for him to find his HEA.

Kitt is exactly what Core needs, someone to push him past his limits. She helps him to see that he isn't the broken man he thought he was. Together they find the happiness they are both searching for.

I love this series. The Uncertain Saints are a band of misfits who have one thing in common, life dealt them a shitty hand. Their stories are emotional and Vale does a fantastic job in bringing them to life on the page. They are definitely worth reading.

“Your brother’s gonna kick my ass you know,” I said.

“Why?” she asked.
I snorted.
“A, because he doesn’t like me. Two because he doesn’t like me,” I explained seriously.
“My brother’s suspicious,” she amended. “And he doesn’t hate you. If he hated you, you’d be treated like my brother.”
“And how’s that?” I asked in confusion, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Like a common criminal,” she expounded. “Ridley keeps him under surveillance, and he doesn’t get to come around me, him, or any of the club members.”
“Hmm,” I started walking faster. “Interesting.”
She nodded.
“He’s not here,” she informed me.
“Okay,” I said, my eyes following the movement of her finger as she brought one manicured finger up to her mouth and bit lightly on the nail.
“Do I have to spell it out for you?” She lifted her brows, her finger still rubbing lightly across her bottom lip.
I rebalanced my weight on both feet as I readied myself for whatever was going to come out of her mouth next.
I wasn’t disappointed. It was quite shocking, to say the least.
“I want you to fuck me,” she said.
She didn’t lead up to it or anything, just blurted that shit out there.
Which might’ve been why I couldn’t think of anything to say to that.
“I’m…” I hesitated.
“You’re a pussy,” she said, brows raised.
My eyebrows lowered.
“That’s certainly not what I was going to say,” I informed her. “Which you would’ve known had you not interrupted me.”
“Most people finish their sentences in a timely manner,” she said stiffly.
She was getting pissed.
Interesting.
“Desperate much?” I asked her. “You have to proposition guys that don’t want you in an attempt to get what you want?”
Her mouth dropped open in affront.
“You’re shitting me right now, aren’t you?” she asked, hurt evident in her voice.
“Yes,” I said, contrite. “But you surprised me is all. And I’m not a pussy.”
“Well, what are you?” she asked primly.
“Honestly?” I asked.
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“I’m trying to get into a club that my father thinks’ll be good for my PTSD and anger management,” I answered. “And to do that, I need to not piss off the members; for example, your brother.”
Her mouth thinned.
“My brother’s already let you know that he doesn’t like you. What’s sleeping with his sister going to change?” she challenged.
I paused, unsure how to answer that.
“Well…” on one hand she was correct. He wasn’t going to hate me any less if I slept with his sister.
And I did find her attractive.
Extremely attractive.
She was gorgeous.
And I’m not talking in a girl next door kind of way. I’m talking about a ‘keep her locked down in baggy pants and a sweat shirt’ kind of way and still beat the men off with a stick.
She’d be hell on the heart, that was for sure.
Her long, black curly hair came to about mid back, and her porcelain white skin seemed almost luminescent under the light of the moon.
She had long legs that looked fucking superb in those tight jeans she had on, not to mention the black Jack Daniel’s t-shirt she was wearing, cut up in that fashion that women seemed to like now-a-days, was only accentuating her curves.
And what little denial I tried to hang on to by the tips of my fingers slipped away, leaving only one thing in my mind.
I couldn’t pass this opportunity up.
Not after I’d been lusting after the woman for so long, even though she didn’t know that.
“You really want this?” I asked her, crowding her so close that she started backing up out of reaction.
She licked her lips, and then nodded.
“Yes,” she said surely. “Or I wouldn’t have brought it up.”

“You know who I am?” he asked. “You’re not intoxicated and asking for things that you shouldn’t be asking for in this condition.”

She laughed in my face.
“Oh, honey. Now you’re just trying to think up an excuse to back out, aren’t you?” she glared.

Review:

Keagan is the second book in the This Is Our Life series. This is a new to me author. So when given the opportunity to read a book by someone new, I'm going to jump at it. I hadn't read the first book, so going into this series, I didn't know what to expect. The story is a second chance romance but is told through a lot of flashbacks. When it comes to flashbacks in books, I'm not a fan of so much of them. With this book, I felt that the story would have worked better had they just told their backstory, gotten it out if the way, and then began with the present day story. I felt that the back and forth took away some of the story's effect.

The concept of this story is a great. The author tries to build upon the bond that Keagan and Jocelyn created as teenagers. The fact that it didn't start off as romantic it what makes it interesting. Most second chance romance books are about a second chance at the romance that once was. Here, the characters never really got the chance at romance, mainly because Jocelyn keeps him at distance, friendzoned. In present day they have a romantic connection, one that doesn't seem as authentic as the author had hoped. One of the reasons is because Jocelyn never recognised Keagan as an adult. If they were as close as they appeared to be, why not recognise him? Keagan knew who she was from the start but the same cannot be said for her.

While I admit I like the concept, the story just gets lost. As a reader, I felt that there wasn't an opportunity to connect with the characters. Let's be honest, that's kind of important. Without that, the reader becomes disconnected and uninterested in the story.
I'm sure the author is a great storyteller but this just wasn't my cup of tea.

5 Star Review plus Giveaway for The Darkest Link by Scarlett Cole

When a pin-up worthy tattoo artist meets a car mechanic on a Florida roadside, it feels like the start of a great one-night stand. But when feelings grow, and secrets are revealed, both of their lives will be at risk. The only question is from who? Find out in THE DARKEST LINK by RITA finalist, Scarlett Cole.

Title: THE DARKEST LINK
Author: Scarlett Cole
Series: Second Circle Tattoos #4
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Pub. Date: August 30, 2016

Synopsis:

When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle...and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist. He's the perfect candidate for a mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one-night stand.

Reid left his life in Chicago far behind him and hasn't been back, but he's never been able to escape the guilt he feels about his own painful role in inviting a monster into his baby sister's life. A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn't feel he deserves, and their one night together has him wanting more than he should. When he surprises her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami, he's in for a shock—and a fist to the face—when his past and present collide.

With secrets coming to the surface, Reid and Lia are thrown into a world of betrayal and lies that threatens to pull them under, and the last link to his former life may be the darkest of them all.

Review:
I've been a fan of this series since I read the first book. So obviously I this one, it's Harper's brother. This is an emotional story. It's one of redemption and second chances. It's a must read especially for fans of this series.

Reid holds onto so much guilt. He blames himself for Harper's attack. Obviously he loves his sister of he feels so intensely that he is to blame. In order for him to move on with his life he must get Harper's forgiveness.
Ironically the woman that Reid becomes involved with is friends with his sister. Chance meeting brings him face to face with Harper but it doesn't go as planned. Emotions run high on both sides of the issue. Once everything is out in the open, everyone gets a chance to rebuild relationships that were strained.

For Lia, she lives two lives. With her friends and colleagues, she's the pinup princess. For her family, she's the disappointment who refuses to conform. She has spent so much time trying to hide her true self, she just wants to be free. Meeting Reid is a blessing. He shows her that she's perfect, tattoos and all. He helps her to understand that unconditional love means to love someone for who they are, not what you try to make them be.
Lia's father stoops to a new low in order to make his family appear perfect. Lia and her mother are put in harms way, luckily Reid is there to pick up the pieces.

I absolutely loved everything about this book. This author has become one of my favorites and a go to author for romance books.

What I love about this series is that Cole gives us the perfect mix of suspense and romance. You're always intrigued from beginning to end. My hope is that this isn't the end of these characters. I would love to see more of them in the future.

“What is this?” she asked, running her hand over the elongated hood.
“A 1958 Ford Thunderbird. It was a shell when I bought it. Was found in an unused barn with a bunch of other old classics.”
The wheels were black with white faces, and the soft top was a creamy white. Reflections from the chrome cast light onto the white walls.
“I love it,” she said, excited to sit inside.
“Hood up or down?” Kenny asked, slipping her cases into the trunk.
“Oh, most definitely down,” Lia said. Screw the victory rolls, she could always put her hair into a high ponytail and add the red ribbon she had in her purse if her scarf failed. She reached into her bag to find it and tied it around her head.
“I like this,” Kenny said, fingering the knot under her chin gently. The way his eyes crinkled at the corners made her feel all kinds of gooey inside. Perhaps it was a good thing they lived a long drive away from each other. His very presence made it difficult to remember why she was taking some time off from men. But a little harmless flirtation was adding to the adventure of a few days off work. There couldn’t be any harm in that.
Once inside the car, Kenny took her hotel details and plugged them into his phone. “There are few downsides to the classics, but lack of sat-nav has to be one,” he said, turning the radio on. “Ready?”
“I feel like Thelma and Louise about to drive over the edge of the cliff,” she said with a laugh.
“Close. That was a 1966 Ford Thunderbird, eight years younger than this baby. Does that make me J.D.?”
“That depends. Are you planning on driving me to a motel, having your wicked way with me on the dresser, then stealing my life savings?”
“I know a motel, don’t know if they have a dresser, but more than willing to do a drive-by to find out.”
Lia laughed. “I was joking.”
“I wasn’t. Say the word, Red.”
He revved the engine several times, the low growl sexy as all hell, and grinned as he roared out onto the street. Lia watched his hand as he shifted the stick. He caressed the gear stick. The more she stared, the more turned on she became until she had to cross her legs and look out of the window.
Damn him for getting her so hot and bothered. She spared a glance back toward him, just as he turned to face her. And he winked. Because he knew.
And that just turned her on even more.
